Bringing back central Park Triathlon in 2026 2027?
Update 2/25/26: Hello everyone,
We have an important update regarding the Central Park Triathlon originally scheduled for 7/26, this year. We’ve been incredibly excited by the massive interest and enthusiasm from all of you. This race has always been an iconic event for NYTRI, proudly running for nearly two decades in Central Park. Many of you have emailed us sharing how happy you were to see it returning, and we’ve been just as hopeful to bring it back, especially with the new Davis Center ready to serve the NYC community.
Earlier this season, we submitted our permit application to the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation. Unfortunately, we’ve been informed that they are unable to grant us a permit for this year’s event. While this news is disappointing, the Park has expressed openness to discussing future dates, potentially in 2027. As many of you know, securing city permits for our races is never an easy process. We remain committed to trying again and will reapply next year. Thank you all for your continued support, patience, and passion for racing with NYTRI. We’ll keep you posted on any updates. Remember to check our race schedule on our site for other races to register!
We have many new fans and new athletes racing with us and following us on our social media accounts for the past 5 years. Many didn’t know that we used to host a triathlon event in Central Park, the old Lasker Pool. Is now called the Gottesman Pool, in the newly constructed Davis Center. Dan Honig was the club founder and he began hosting the Central Park Triathlon since 1985.

As a result of the construction as well as COVID, the city had lost a very valuable event affecting more than 600+ of our athletes annually. The Central Park Triathlon had been a very popular triathlon event introducing mostly New Yorkers to our sport as well as encouraging them to live a more active life style. Many of our past, OG athletes went on competing in the USAT National Championships to Ironman, and while many others continued to become active and living a very healthy life style. A lot of them started off competing in our Central Park Triathlon. We do offer two annual triathlon events in New York City, the Staten Island Triathlon and the Rockaway Beach Triathlon. However, they are less than ideal to introduce newcomers to our sport because of the travel and the challenging open water swim.
We really love to bring back the Central Park Triathlon to the city and to continue to serve New Yorkers of all ages and background. Most importantly, to get more New Yorkers to utilize the new Davis Center as intended, an urban oasis where they can experience a triathlon event without traveling miles away from the city! They will become better swimmers, cyclists, and runners as well while appreciating what the city can offer.
We are planning to have the Central Park Triathlon on 7/26 but the race date is still fluid and can change in the future. We are working with the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation to bring back the race. Anything could change. We are very hopeful the race will come back. If not, it would be a great lost to the city as well as to all current and future triathletes. Is a sprint distance triathlon with 400m swim in the pool. Athletes will line up and queue up by the side of the pool. Is not going to be a mass start swim. A 5 second gap per swimmer going into the pool. Swimming 8 lanes. Nothing changes with the bike segment. 2 laps and totaling 12 miles. The run? For the first time, you have to run up the Harlem Hill. Is either out and back on the west side, or getting across the 102nd st Traverse and head to the Engineers Gate, and back to the Davis Center. The finish will be at the jogger’s lane outside of the Davis Center, not necessarily by the pool like in the past.
